"THE PICKS AND OTHER TALES" OF CHARLY MARTINEZ

By: Fernando Carrasco Núñez

"Tines and Other Stories " (Lima, Arteidea, 2009) is the short text that Charly Martinez Toledo began his literary career in our country, where in the last year there was the frequent appearance of very young authors with books inaugural show features various, some attached within our realistic narrative tradition and others with more specific proposals related the fantastic or related topics. In this sense we can say that the book Charly Martinez, shown by the stories, tune to both trends. On the one hand we have stories, "Lives Destroyed" and "Tomorrow morning, pol favola" that are part of the Peruvian neorealism, as is known, reaches its peak with the stories of Julio Ramón Ribeyro, Carlos Eduardo Zavaleta and Oswaldo Reynoso. In another breath are the story's title and the volume called "I Killed Archimedes' texts that develop topics related to witchcraft and madness, respectively, than those closer to the fantastic line. Thus, the story entitled "spikes" tells a story of realistic trend at first, but then the occurrence of certain extraordinary items related to magic and the supernatural have a history of trends in fantasy and horror story, perhaps along the lines of some masters of this genre as Poe and Guy de Maupassant. In the same way in the story "I Killed Archimedes" the author unravels the inner world of someone who feels alienated the compulsive desire to tell his alleged crime, this story takes us back, saving all distances, with stories like The Tell-Tale Heart or The black cat that artist's romantic and wonderful it was Edgar Allan Poe. In these two stories by Charles Martinez, as occurs in true stories, the protagonists appear in crucial situations pursuing an objective. In "spikes" Patricia is a beautiful sorceress who seeks to boldly how to get rid of a curse that prevents him from being happy and "I killed Archimedes" There are a desperate desire to confess to a crime may be chimeric perhaps as unaware of how the protagonist seeks to present a true crime is not known. The other two stories mentioned at the beginning "Lives Destroyed" and "Tomorrow morning, pol favola" realistic stories show where, similarly, their heroes are the anguished search of a purpose. The first is the lover who seeks to regain the love of the beloved and the other we have a boy burdened by poverty and unemployment is only seeking a chance to survive in this capitalist world degenerated and insensitive. Highlighted in these two stories the presence of marginal scenarios that allude to the world of our Lima in recent years chifas populated in each corner, local neon lights and half dressed girls dancing to the rhythm of chicha music. At the same time it should be stressed the way the author manages to build to its female characters by giving them particular qualities that leave traces in the reader. But it should be noted also that all the protagonists of "The pins and other stories" do not see their dreams come true. Each ends on the canvas, due to long marked by the stigma of failure. This feature would then end the thread weaving the stories of the book.

an appreciation of the structural side of the stories we note the primacy of traditional storytellers except in the story "I Killed Archimedes" where the protagonist narrator reveals his torment inner world. With regard to the prevailing narrative material available to the use of linearity, but in the story "Spikes" notice beginning in medias res, where, after a dramatic presentation, through a long analepsis tell us details of life last of the players to return to the starting point of the story and then find the unpredictable outcome. Everything stated in the story of Charly Martinez is presented in simple language that sometimes only aims to achieve higher levels. As noted in the four stories that make up this small volume there is a clear notion of what is the story as a narrative genre, made plausible in a young narrator, especially if we consider that in our stumble many times with books or other young authors who have toiled over the label of stories when they do not always. However, in order not to lose objectivity in these rapid assessments, it should be noted that the work could have obtained great achievements if he had worked even in the management of language which, as we all know, is the main weapon of every good writer. To this we must add the spelling blunders occurred in some parts of the text.

Overall we can say that "Tines and Other Stories" Charly Martinez Toledo is an original book with significant strengths that account for the ability of a young narrator who work aims to introduce greater importance in the not distant future, and achieve, therefore, an important place in this explosion of young writers who has been occurring in our midst in recent times.

glimpses TREE

few days ago, the poet Jorge Horna (Celendín, Cajamarca, 1949) I was presented with his third poetry book "Tree of glimpses" (Arteidea Publishers, 2008). In this book you can feel the author's office, inviting us to cover on the landscape of his childhood through a well-crafted poetry (personally, I recommend the first poem: "Rural Women"). From this humble space celebrate the appearance of this new delivery Horna.
